A two-and-a-half-month-old Jack Russell puppy, named Rama, was brutally killed in its owner's yard in an act police have labelled cowardly and disgusting. Rama, who was the runt of her litter, bled to death internally after the attack shattered her rib cage, causing her lungs to haemorrhage.

"The vet said the injuries would most likely have been caused by the pup being kicked or being thrown against a hard object like a brick wall," Senior Constable Eleanor Bergheim said.

Rama's owner, a 60-year-old woman who lives alone, was very distressed.

The offenders entered the yard in Queens Street North, Ballarat, most likely through an unlocked side door, in the early evening of October 28 when the owner was not home.

Sen Const Bergheim said it was likely more than one person was involved in the attack.

Victoria Police have notified the RSPCA, which will help in the investigation.

Sen Const Bergheim said police were investigating a bicycle tire mark which appeared at the side of the house the evening before, had spoken to neighbours, and were now appealing for public information.

She said the penalties for animal cruelty were hefty, and could carry imprisonment as well as substantial fines.
